First Tournament: Things To Expect And Know

First Tee Nerves

Playing in your first golf tournament is an exhilarating experience, but it can also be nerve-wracking. The most nerve-racking moment is hitting your first tee shot, which is completely normal for anyone who has played in a tournament before. It’s natural to feel this way because you want to perform your best and prove that you belong there. Having nerves means that you care about your performance, which is a good thing. However, you can manage your nerves by focusing on your breathing. Taking slow, controlled breaths can help regulate your heart rate and adrenaline, which can affect your golf swing. Remember that the first tee shot is just one shot, so don’t let it overwhelm you. It’s also normal to experience nerves for the first few holes, so try to treat it like any other round of golf especially early on.

Pace Of Play

When playing in tournaments, it’s important to prepare for a slower pace of play. While it can be frustrating, it’s a common occurrence as players tend to take more time in tournament settings, especially when rule officials are needed to help with a ruling. To cope with this, try to engage in small talk with your playing partners and stay prepared to play when it’s your turn. If you suspect that your ball may be unfindable, tee up a provisional to avoid having to run back to the tee. Keep in mind that your round will likely take longer than usual, so it’s essential to maintain a positive mental state throughout your time on the course.

Know The Rules

It’s important to remember that tournament play is not the same as a casual round with friends. Don’t expect to receive “gimmies” and be prepared to sink all your putts. It’s also crucial to understand the difference between a hazard and out of bounds. Make sure to ask the tournament officials or starters about any specific tournament rules, such as lift clean and place if it’s wet or if a particular area on the course is unplayable. If you’re unsure about a ruling, request a rules official to avoid making a mistake and ultimately end up receiving additional penalty strokes. When keeping score, you’ll need to keep track of another player’s score, while another player keeps yours. After each hole, inform your playing partner of the score you’re writing down to avoid any confusion when signing scorecards at the end of the round. Lastly, ensure that the score you wrote down is correct before signing the official scorecard to avoid disqualification.

Mark Your Golf Ball

It’s essential to have a unique marking on your golf ball since many players tend to use the same brands such as Titleist and TaylorMade. Make sure your ball is marked in a way that distinguishes it from others. On the first tee, you’ll need to disclose your marking to your playing partners, and you’ll also need to do this if you switch balls between holes. If you hit a provisional ball, ensure that it either has a different number or marking than the one you suspect will be unfindable. This way, you’ll be able to distinguish between the two.

Bonus: Have Fun And Enjoy Yourself!

Keep in mind to enjoy the competition and the experience . It’s your first tournament experience, and you’re not playing for a green jacket. So, if things don’t go as planned, don’t stress about it! Achieving success in golf tournaments comes down to good play and playing experience, so take it easy on yourself and aim to have fun! Don’t let the occasional bad shot ruin your round or experience. They’re bound to happen, so try to stay positive and do your best out there!

Mental Tips To Help You On The Course

If you have ever played golf, you know how difficult and unfair the game can be. When you consider what you’re essentially attempting to do in golf, it can sound absurd when said out loud. You stand over 400 yards away from a hole that is just 4.25 inches wide, trying to hit a small white ball in the fewest number of strokes. While mastering the game requires tremendous physical skill and repetition, many may not realize that the mental aspect is equally if not more important. As Jack Nicklaus famously said, golf is 90% mental and 10% skill, and the more you play, the more true this becomes. Having played for nearly two decades, I’m always experimenting with various mental techniques to improve my game. Here are a few mental tips that you should try during your next round. Enjoy!

Stay Positive

Above all else, it’s crucial to maintain a positive and optimistic mindset when playing golf – I cannot emphasize this enough. In my opinion, this is the most crucial tip to keep in mind. Once negative thoughts infiltrate your mind, your game is effectively over. Negative swing thoughts and negative pre-shot thoughts can be detrimental to your golf game. When standing over the ball and faced with a water hazard, for example, you should think to yourself, “I’ll hit it over the water,” or eliminate the water from your thoughts all together, rather than, “Don’t hit the ball into the water.” Speaking positively to yourself on the course, even when things aren’t going well, can help you improve your scores. Remember, a bad day on the golf course is still better than a day at work!

Stay Present

Staying present is essential. You cannot allow your mind to dwell on past missed shots or future holes and shots that you’ll need to make. The only thing you can control in the moment is the shot you’re taking, so it’s crucial to remain focused on it. It’s impossible to hit good golf shots and achieve low scores if you’re preoccupied with things that haven’t happened yet or things that can’t be changed. Don’t get ahead of yourself on the course; instead, concentrate on the shot at hand, and you’ll notice a significant improvement in your game.

Have The Mind Of A Goldfish

Building upon the previous point, it’s crucial to let go of the past. Adopting a “mind like a goldfish” mentality is essential, which means forgetting everything that occurred more than 10 seconds ago since it’s finished and unchangeable. The next time you’re on the course, try implementing Tiger Woods’ 10-yard rule. According to Tiger’s rule, if you hit a bad shot, you’re only permitted to be upset about it for the first ten yards you walk from the spot where you hit the shot. Once you’ve surpassed the ten-yard mark, forget about it and move on. Focus on the shot at hand, leave the past in the past, and you’ll undoubtedly achieve lower scores.

Have Good Thoughts On The Greens

To improve your putting, it’s crucial to alter your mindset while on the greens. Rather than thinking, “I can’t leave this putt short” or “I can’t hit this past the hole,” change your internal dialogue to “this ball is going into the hole” or “I am going to make this putt.” Having a solid short game and good putting skills is the fastest way to lower your scores and help you when other aspects of your game are not up to par. The key is to stay confident and make assertive strokes while putting. This is especially critical on days when it seems like the putts aren’t dropping. Stay optimistic, say positive affirmations out loud or to yourself before addressing the ball, and witness your putts begin to drop!

Never Give Up

Golf is a challenging and emotionally draining game that can test you throughout the day. However, it’s important to maintain your composure and persevere when battling the course and yourself. If you’re struggling on the front nine, remember that you have a full back nine to turn things around. Don’t let a few bad tee shots out of bounds derail your game; instead, focus on your next shot. In golf, the most crucial shot is always the next one. If you can stay strong and not give up when things aren’t going your way, you’ll emerge stronger on the other side.

The next time you’re on the golf course, give these tips a try and see how they can help lower your scores. As a bonus, here’s one more tip that I swear by: try to think as little as possible. If you’ve been playing golf for a while, you know how to hit the shots you need to shoot good scores. Overthinking and focusing on little details can actually hurt your game. Instead, stay in the moment and focus on the shot at hand. Leave the past behind and save any big swing thoughts for the driving range. Golf is a game that demands your full attention, so stay present and you’ll find success!

Masters Recap

The Masters Tournament has concluded, and as always, it’s a bittersweet feeling to see another year go by. The week was fantastic, and I’m already anticipating the return of golf to Augusta. Throughout the weekend, I observed several noteworthy occurrences, and I’ve put together my takeaways from the 2023 Masters Tournament below. Enjoy!

Rahm Dominates

Mr. Jon Rahm’s victory at the Masters Tournament was well-deserved, and he’s truly a world-class golfer who is unstoppable at the moment. Despite starting with a 4-putt double bogey, Rahmbo emerged as the only Masters winner since Sam Snead in 1952 to win after such a start. Rahm’s exceptional shots and his ability to overcome a 2-shot deficit on Sunday showcased why he’s the best golfer in the world currently. Throughout Sunday, he maintained total control after taking the lead, and he appears to rise to the occasion every time he plays in a major tournament. With this being his second major victory following his win at the 2021 US Open, there is little doubt in my mind that he will achieve the career grand slam and ultimately win another green jacket. He will undoubtedly be a consistent presence in every tournament he plays in for years to come.

Is Koepka back?

Brooks dominated the first three rounds of the tournament and appeared to be unstoppable. He was completely in control of his game and looked fully healthy. Brooks had all the necessary shots and was even making the crucial 6-10 foot putts required to win at Augusta throughout the first three rounds. Unfortunately for Brooks he fell out of form on Sunday and could not get anything going. He fired a disappointing 3-over 75 which is something you can’t do when trying to win any golf tournament. When asked about his health and about LIV, he stated that if he were as healthy then as he is now, it would have been a tougher decision to join the new golf tour. While we can’t be entirely sure if that’s true, it’s undeniable that he tends to perform his best on the biggest stage.

Tiger’s setback

It’s a bittersweet feeling to see Tiger make the cut, as he’s overall very rusty. Nonetheless, he demonstrated glimpses of his vintage self and showcased his remarkable shot-making abilities during rounds 1 and 2. In fact, he even tied the record for most consecutive cuts made at the Masters. However, the rain delays and bad weather took a toll on him, and given his current situation, it’s no wonder he struggled. Walking Augusta is a challenge for anyone, and with Tigers’ physical condition, it was particularly challenging . Unfortunately, the weather and long walk caught up to him early in round 3, and things took a turn for the worse quickly. Ultimately, Tiger was forced to withdraw after aggravating his plantar fasciitis. Hopefully Tiger can heal up and be ready for the remaining Majors this season.

Canadians disappoint

The Canadians had a disappointing week, with only Hughes making the cut. It was a challenging time for all Canadian players, with Hughes finishing in an underwhelming tie for 29th place. Of all the Canadians, Corey Conners was the most disappointing, as he was considered a real contender to win the green jacket, especially after winning the previous week. While Canadian golf is in good hands, it’s disheartening when they are unable to perform as expected on the biggest stage.

Hello Sam Bennett

Sam Bennett is an absolute stud. As an amateur, he played phenomenally well for the first two days. Playing with the biggest stars of the game, he exuded confidence during his Masters and major debut. He hits the ball an incredible distance and appeared to have a perfect grasp of where to hit every shot during his first two rounds at Augusta. He was the only amateur to make the cut, and he even managed to finish tied for 16th place. I’m eager to see Bennett turn pro and witness what he’s capable of as a full-time Tour member.

Rory Struggles

Once again, Rory had a chance for the career grand slam, but he uncharacteristically missed the cut at this year’s Masters. After an even-par first round, he fired a disappointing 5-over 77 in the second round, ultimately missing the cut by two strokes. It’s unfortunate, as there was a lot of hype around Rory coming into the week as the favorite. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get anything going, and it’s starting to look like winning at Augusta might be too much for him. Hopefully, that’s not the case, but he’ll need to be firing on all cylinders for a chance to win next year.

Scottie’s Putter Failed Him

Scottie shows why it’s hard to repeat as a winner. Scottie finished T-10, which was the best Masters finish by a repeat winner since Spieth in 2015. He hit the ball great all week but just couldn’t make any putts. Despite his struggles on the greens, it was still an impressive showing, as he was T-2 in greens in regulation throughout the week. However, as we all know, you can’t win a green jacket if your putter fails you. Scottie will remain a favorite at Augusta for years to come if he can continue to play at the same level.

Rain Delays are the worst

The constant horn blowing by tournament officials was very frustrating. As a viewer, it’s disappointing when you have your day planned around watching golf only to have the play suspended. It must have been even worse for the players who had to reset their focus and momentum. Although the grounds crew at Augusta did their best to keep the course playable, Mother Nature ultimately prevailed, as she often does.

Masters Week

Masters week has finally arrived, and for golf enthusiasts, there is nothing quite like experiencing golf at Augusta – it’s on par with Christmas morning. As a unique tradition, the Masters showcases everything that the great game of golf has to offer. This past weekend, Augusta hosted the Women’s Amateur Championship, where top amateur women golfers competed in a thrilling tournament that set the tone for the exciting week ahead. Ultimately, the first-place finish went to the number one ranked amateur, Rose Zhang, who claimed her first Women’s Amateur title on the second playoff hole. Another pre-tournament tradition is the annual Drive, Chip and Putt competition, which was held on Sunday. This engaging event gives young players aged 7-14 the opportunity to compete at Augusta National and receive the full pro treatment. The competition is televised, with former Masters champions present to distribute awards and meet the young competitors. It’s a fantastic way to kick off Masters week, with heartwarming competition and the chance to glimpse future greats of the game.

Following the weekend events, players officially arrive at Augusta and begin practicing on the course from Monday through Wednesday. During this time, they become accustomed to the course’s conditions and develop a strategy to tackle the challenges they’ll face on Thursday. It’s also the first day that patrons are allowed on the grounds, giving them the opportunity to experience the magic of the Masters. However, attending the Masters is different from any other golfing event, as Augusta National Golf Club aims to maintain the tournament’s traditional style since its introduction to the PGA Tour. For this reason, strict rules must be followed by fans attending the event. For instance, phones are not allowed on the premises, and cameras are only permitted during the practice rounds, not during actual tournament rounds. Additionally, outside bags are not permitted, and if you wish to use a lawn chair, you must purchase a Masters chair on-site. All attendees must adhere to these guidelines, making the week even more special.

Before the start of the tournament, there’s another exciting event – the Par 3 contest. It’s an opportunity for players to unwind and have some fun with their families. During the contest, most players have a family member or partner caddie for them, making it a memorable experience for the whole family. The Par 3 contest is a laid-back affair, with caddies or family members taking shots and making putts themselves. Most players in the field participate in the event, and a noteworthy fact is that no Par 3 contest winner has ever gone on to win the Masters Tournament.

Let’s move on to the highly anticipated Masters Tournament, where professional golfers will compete for the prestigious Green Jacket. The Masters is a world-renowned golf tournament and the first of four major tournaments each year on the Tour. Augusta National Golf Club presents one of the toughest challenges for golfers every year, with the course demanding precision and versatility from the players. Its length and slick greens require accurate tee shots and a great short game to do well. Winning the Masters is an achievement in itself, as it not only grants you the privilege of wearing the iconic Green Jacket, but also provides a lifetime exemption into the tournament each year. Every professional golfer considers The Masters as the ultimate golf tournament to win, as it cements their place in the historic golf history books.

In my opinion, this week is the greatest week of the year, and I know I’m not alone in feeling that way. The Masters is a flawless event, and it’s almost always a weekend filled with drama when all the top golfers are battling it out on the leaderboard. While I always root for Tiger Woods whenever he competes in a PGA Tour event, his health issues make it difficult for him to win this year. Nonetheless, he is still Tiger Woods, and there’s nothing quite like watching the greatest golfer of all time maneuver around the greatest golf course of all time. I’ll also be rooting for Rory and JT, two young legends who have yet to win at Augusta, but I believe their time has finally come.

Regrettably, for the past nine years, I have not been fortunate enough to win the lottery for purchasing tickets to attend the Masters. Like millions of other fans, I will be watching the tournament from the comfort of my couch. However, I believe that one day my name will be drawn from the lottery, and I will be there to witness the excitement firsthand! To all the golf enthusiasts participating in their own Masters office pools or those who have placed bets on the event, I wish you the best of luck. The wait is over, and the Masters is finally here! So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the week and weekend of top-notch golfing action. Make sure you find a comfortable spot on the couch because once you’re settled in, you won’t want to move. Let’s have a fantastic Masters week, everyone!

Golf Bag Essentials

Golf requires thorough preparation, both in terms of planning every shot during play and ensuring you have the necessary equipment on hand while on the course. Having an organized and well-equipped golf bag can enhance your playing experience, leading to more enjoyment and ultimately better scores. It’s essential to take care of your physical needs and make sure you have everything you need for each round of golf to avoid any issues later on.

Tees And Golf Balls

Although it may seem obvious, I’ve noticed that many of my fellow golfers often forget to bring an ample supply of golf balls and tees with them. Perhaps you may be one of these individuals! It can be frustrating for everyone involved if you have to constantly ask for tees and golf balls. Therefore, it’s important to make sure you stock up on enough balls and tees before starting your game to avoid any inconvenience.

A Good Towel

A high-quality towel is essential on the golf course. It can assist in keeping your clubs and grooves free of debris, resulting in better contact and ultimately improved performance. Additionally, you can use your towel to clean your golf ball on the greens, guaranteeing that your putts roll smoothly and accurately.

Rangefinder

Being aware of your distance to the hole is a significant advantage on the golf course and can aid in lowering your scores. While I understand that distance measuring devices can be costly, it’s worth investing in one to witness the benefits firsthand. So go ahead and make the investment, and you’ll likely see a significant improvement in your overall performance.

Sharpies

Sharpies are incredibly useful for marking your golf ball, as well as for jotting down scores on the scorecard in the absence of a pencil.

Rain Gear

Being caught in a rainstorm on the golf course can be a miserable experience, leaving you drenched and demotivated to perform at your best. To avoid this, it’s crucial to have rain gear conveniently stored in your bag, as you never know when inclement weather may strike. Always be prepared, and you’ll be able to stay dry and focused on your game, regardless of the weather conditions.

More Layers/Extra Socks

The temperature on the golf course can fluctuate significantly based on factors such as location, time of day, and season. Therefore, it’s essential to have appropriate layers of clothing to ensure comfort and performance. Additionally, it’s a good idea to carry extra socks in your bag, as changing them out mid-round or during a long day of play can help keep you refreshed and focused. Stay prepared, and you’ll be able to maintain your energy and concentration throughout your game.

Sunscreen

Let’s face it: we are no match for the power of the sun. As someone with very fair skin, I typically need to reapply sunscreen at least twice during a round of golf. It’s important to have sunscreen on hand to avoid getting burned and to not face potential health complications in the future. Protect yourself and your skin, and you’ll be able to enjoy many more rounds of golf for the years to come.

Extra Gloves

Carrying an extra golf glove is essential, as it is a critical tool for optimal performance. Golf gloves tend to wear out relatively quickly, so it’s crucial to replace them at the first signs of wear and tear. Additionally, gloves are often lost on the course, so having an extra one readily available can be incredibly helpful in such a situation. Always be prepared, and you’ll be able to maintain your grip and play at your best, regardless of any unforeseen circumstances.

Ball Markers/ Divot Tools

Adhering to proper golf etiquette requires a player to mark their ball on the green and fix any divots or ball marks they made. This demonstrates respect for your fellow players and the golf course itself. By doing your part to maintain the course throughout your round, you’ll be showing appreciation for the beauty and quality of the course, and ensuring that it remains in excellent condition for future players to enjoy. So ensure you have ball markers and divot tools ready to use!

Snacks And Water

Playing a full round of golf can be quite demanding on the body, particularly during hot summer months. It’s crucial to have some small snacks on hand to help fuel your body and maintain optimal performance throughout the game. Consider packing snacks such as protein bars, beef jerky, or trail mix to keep your energy levels up and help you play at your best. By staying nourished and hydrated, you’ll be able to enjoy your round and perform to the best of your abilities.

Umbrella

If you don’t have rain gear on hand, an umbrella can be a suitable alternative for keeping yourself dry on the course. However, it’s important to note that being stranded on the course without either rain gear or an umbrella can be highly inconvenient and may even detract from the enjoyment of the game. It’s always better to be prepared for any potential weather conditions you may encounter while playing golf. By packing appropriate gear, you can be sure to stay comfortable and focused, regardless of what the elements have in store.

Band-aids

Blisters are a common issue that many golfers experience on their hands and feet. Fortunately, having band-aids on hand can provide an easy and effective solution to help you manage any discomfort you may encounter. By being prepared and having band-aids at the ready, you can quickly address any blisters and continue to enjoy your round without any distractions or discomfort.

By having these 12 essential items in your golf bag at all times, you can ensure that you are well-prepared to handle any challenges that may arise on the course. By taking care of the things that are within your control, you can set yourself up for success and focus on playing your best game. Remember, when you are prepared, the rest will fall into place!

Golf Etiquette 101

Although golf is a fantastic game, it cannot be denied that it has numerous rules and guidelines that must be followed. While I agree with majority of them, I believe that golf could be improved by eliminating some. The abundance of rules can be overwhelming for beginners , making it challenging to get into the game. The purpose of this blog is to assist in reducing the anxiety that new players may experience. I will discuss some essential golf etiquette rules, which will enable you to behave like the gentleman or gentlewoman that the game demands.

Dress Code

It’s no surprise that the sport known as the “gentleman’s game” has a dress code. Since its beginning, this has been the case, and although most clubs have become more lenient in recent times, dress codes are still enforced at the majority of clubs. Public clubs keep things simple: no jeans, collared shirts, and no cargo or gym shorts. Private clubs have similar rules, but your shirt must be tucked in, and wearing your hat backwards is usually not allowed. Golf shoes (without metal spikes) are recommended for optimal performance, but running shoes can work as well. Women’s clothing may be subject to stricter enforcement due to the length of certain pieces of clothing. To ensure you are appropriately dressed before starting your round, check the club’s website for a detailed dress code for both men and women.

Pace Of Play

Pace of play is a crucial aspect of golf. Let’s face it, golf is already a long game, so it’s essential to play your round promptly to avoid slowing down the groups behind you. Ideally, 18 holes of golf should take anywhere from 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on the course’s busyness that day. It would be best to complete each hole within 12-15 minutes. Suppose you’re looking for a lost ball. In that case, it’s recommended to set a timer for two minutes, and after it goes off, stop searching and declare the ball lost. Play “ready golf,” which means that if you are prepared to hit, even if it’s not technically your turn, you should already be playing. Have your club ready on the tee box and a general idea of the club you’ll need for your next shot. If there is a group waiting behind you regularly, hit your tee shots and then wait for them to arrive at the tee and have them play through. Trust me, they will appreciate it!

Taking Care Of The Course

Out of all the values I hold, I place this one at the top. Perhaps it’s because I spent many years maintaining courses, but I also believe in the saying that if you take care of the course, the course will take care of you. It’s important to repair and refill your divots on the fairways and tee boxes, rake your bunkers after being in them, and replace your ball marks and at least three others on the greens. Golf can be an expensive sport, and the last thing you want is to putt through a mess of ball marks on the green or hit bunker shots out of footprints. A little effort can go a long way, and if you can adopt these habits when you first start playing, our golf courses will be better for everyone. Trust me, if you treat the course with respect, you will be rewarded by the golfing Gods.

Respecting Cart/ Course Rules

When using a golf cart to play your round, it’s important to adhere to the cart rules set for that day. If you’re asked to stay on the cart path, make sure you stick to it. These rules are in place to preserve the course and maintain the standards set by the club. It’s crucial not to drive your cart near or on the green as there are usually cart exit signs located about 20-30 yards before the green.

Respect Your Playing Partners

In golf, focus and concentration are key since the course is already challenging enough. It’s important to maintain a quiet atmosphere when your playing partners are hitting their shots. Additionally, when on the green, be sure to mark your ball and avoid walking in the direct line of your partners’ putts. Remember, you wouldn’t want these distractions to affect your own game, so it’s important to extend the same courtesy to others.

Do Not Throw Clubs/ Damage The Course

Playing golf can be a challenge, and it’s important to maintain your composure on the course. Throwing clubs or intentionally damaging the course is never acceptable and could result in being banned from the course. Remember to have fun and not let a bad day affect your behaviour towards the course and others.

My Top 10 Courses Played

Since a young age, golf has been an integral part of my life, both as a spectator and a player. As a result, I have had the opportunity to play numerous courses throughout my life. While some of these experiences have been more enjoyable than others, I wanted to showcase the top ten courses that I have been fortunate enough to play and provide some insight on each one. If you have played any of these courses, feel free to leave a comment below, and don’t hesitate to share your own favorites as well!

Cabot Cliffs (Inverness, Nova Scotia)

Cabot Cliffs, my top pick, shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone familiar with my golfing preferences. Visiting Cabot had always been a dream of mine, and last summer, I finally got the chance to make the trip. Consistently ranked among the top ten courses worldwide and ranked as Canada’s finest course, Cabot Cliffs’ awe-inspiring views are breathtaking, as you can see from the pictures on my website. The course itself is in impeccable condition, the staff are exceptional, and it genuinely feels like golf heaven, especially when you are playing a twilight round and have the sun setting over the ocean. I was lucky to have played in perfect weather, which was a huge bonus, but I know I would have loved it regardless. Although it is quite pricey, it is definitely worth every penny, and you won’t be disappointed. As a fan of links-style golf, combining it with the stunning views makes it a must-play. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that I birdied the iconic 16th hole, where you have to tee off over the ocean. I am undoubtedly going back one day!

Cabot Links (Inverness, Nova Scotia)

Number two on my list is Cabot Links. While the Links course lacks the signature holes like the Cliffs, it’s not really an issue. The majority of the holes are situated along the ocean, and, like the Cliffs, the course is in exceptional condition. The Links course is a top 40 course worldwide and top seven in Canada, but, again, my words do not do these two courses justice. You will be in awe while playing both Cabot Cliffs and Cabot Links. Like the Cliffs, the Links is also expensive, but you get what you pay for, and you don’t want to miss out on playing both courses while you’re there.

*bonus is the par 3 Nest course at Cabot… a beautiful par 3 course that offers night golf! A very cool experience and great idea to do if you make the trip out.

Hamilton Golf And Country Club (Hamilton, ON)

Hamilton Golf and Country Club holds a special place in my heart as it is located in my hometown and was the site of the first professional golf event I ever attended in person. This course, which features 27 holes, including the championship West/South course, has hosted multiple Canadian Opens, most recently in 2019. Additionally, it boasts a well-maintained short game course that is perfect for practicing wedges and shorter irons. Ranked as the ninth best course in Canada, Hamilton is a private course and is only accessible to members or those who are invited by a member. However, I was fortunate enough to play a few rounds there by working on the course’s grounds crew for a summer, which granted me the privilege of playing at certain times. Overall, I had a fantastic experience and greatly enjoyed my time at Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

The Magnolia Course At Walt Disney (Florida)

Moving on to the Magnolia Course at Walt Disney Resort in Florida, I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to play golf there during a couple of my Disney World vacations. The Palm and Magnolia courses were once the site of a PGA Tour event, and even though I was still relatively new to golf when I played the Magnolia, I recall the course being in superb condition, with greens that felt as smooth as glass. Although my focus was on my poor performance, I had a great experience playing a morning round with my Dad and, looking back, can appreciate the beauty of the course.

Eagles Nest (Toronto, Ontario)

Eagles Nest, located just outside of Toronto, Ontario, is a public course that offers a links-style design, continuing with the theme of the previous courses mentioned. It is regarded as one of the top 100 courses in Canada, and for good reason. The course is challenging, with each hole presenting a unique test for players of all levels. You’ll enjoy every moment of the experience as it pushes every aspect of your game. Be sure to arrive early and take advantage of their pristine practice facility. Sponsored by Titleist, you’ll feel like a Tour Pro while practicing on the range. If you reside in the Greater Toronto Area, I highly recommend making the trip to Eagles Nest, as it is an annual favorite of mine.

Glen Abbey (Oakville, ON)

One of my top 10 courses is another Canadian Open venue, and for several reasons. Firstly, I find the layout of the course very enjoyable, and many of the tee shots really suit my eye, making it a pleasure to play. The course also has a rich history, which is a significant factor for me. Specifically, it is the site of one of Tiger Woods’ greatest shots, which occurred on the par 5 18th hole. Tiger won here three times in a row and made an iconic shot from the right fairway bunker. It is an incredible feeling to stand in that spot and attempt what the greatest golfer of all time did, even though unlike Tiger, I failed miserably. Glen Abbey, located in the Greater Toronto Area, is highly accessible, and you can book tee times through GolfNow, as it has opened up to the public. It is also a ClubLink course, and I was fortunate enough to play there several times during my two-year membership. The course is always maintained in excellent condition, and it’s exciting to play a course that has hosted a Tour event. When you tee it up there, take in all the history that has taken place on your walk around the course; you won’t regret it!

Rattlesnake Point Golf Club (Milton, ON)

The final courses on my list are all in the same tier, so it’s challenging to rank them. However, I have to give the edge to Rattlesnake Point because the property has so much to offer. There are two 18-hole championship courses that are always in excellent condition. They regularly host US Open qualifiers, so the course has seen its fair share of Tour-caliber players come through. The driving range is massive, with numerous hitting bays available to use. They also have a world-class putting green and a separate chipping green so vast that you’ll have your own little section every time you practice. Additionally, they have a 9-hole academy course that’s perfect for dialing in those short irons. Rattlesnake is a private club that’s part of the ClubLink family, so to play here, you’ll need to be a member or play with one. If you’re ever given the opportunity, don’t hesitate to say yes because you’ll love the layouts of both of these great courses.

Glencairn Golf Club (Milton, ON)

Ranked at number 8, Glencarin Golf Club holds a special place in my heart as a links style course with 27 incredible holes to play. The moment I arrived, I felt like I was transported to Scotland due to its authentic design. As a huge fan of links golf, I knew it would be one of my top courses. Their practice facility is top-notch with a full range, and separate putting and chipping greens. It also helps that this is the place where I shot my personal best score of two under par two years ago, and I’ve been chasing to beat that ever since. Glencairn is a Clublink course, which means playing here is only possible by being a Clublink member or playing with a member. I had the chance to play here numerous times during my Clublink tenure, and I can’t wait to have the opportunity to do it again.

Otter Creek Golf Club (Otterville, ON)

Otter Creek is a hidden gem nestled in southern Ontario, and offers a stunning layout that poses a unique challenge on every hole. Despite being a fully public course, it maintains a level of exclusivity that makes it a must-visit destination for avid golfers. One thing to note is that the course plays at least 300-400 yards longer than what the scorecard suggests, so be sure to factor that in when deciding on which tees to play from. The starter will even ask for your handicap and recommend a suitable tee based on your skill level. The course features plenty of demanding carries over hazards and can get quite windy, making it a truly challenging experience. However, the full range and excellent clubhouse with a beautiful patio make for a great spot to relax after the round. I’ve only played here once and loved every minute of it, and I look forward to making it a regular stop for years to come.

Le Diable (Mont Tremblant, Quebec)

Completing the list is a course that was never on my radar until I stumbled upon it. Le Diable is an exceptional 18-hole course located on the outskirts of Quebec. Le Diable ranks in the top 100 courses in Canada and for good reason. Their top-notch training academy and two full ranges are just some of the amenities offered here. The course boasts impressive elevation changes throughout, highlighted by the signature par-3 6th hole. Every hole demanded our full attention, and we couldn’t get enough of it. It’s just one spectacular golf hole after another. I can’t wait to return to Le Diable one day, and you should definitely add it to your bucket list of golf trips.

Full Swing Episodes Ranked

The recognition of golf as a sport has been increasing lately, and Netflix’s new series could be the tipping point for more golf content to come. Golf has always been a challenging sport to market due to its lack of personalities, long duration, and lack of understanding among some viewers. However, with the rise of young talent and behind-the-scenes insights provided by Netflix’s Full Swing, these challenges could become a thing of the past. The show highlights a wild year in golf by following various players and capturing candid moments. I have personally watched the show twice and enjoyed every minute of it. In this post, I’ll be sharing my biased ranking of the show’s episodes, so be warned that there will be spoilers. If you haven’t watched Full Swing yet, head over to Netflix, binge-watch all eight episodes, and then come back to compare your rankings with mine!

1. Don’t Get Bitter, Get Better (Episode 6)

The top-ranking episode is “Don’t Get Bitter, Get Better,” named after a quote by Tiger Woods, which is explained in the beginning scenes. The episode focuses on two PGA Tour players, Tony Finau and Collin Morikawa, who are different in their playing styles and personal lives. However, they share a common bond as they both started playing golf because of Tiger Woods, like millions of other golfers worldwide. The episode offers a unique perspective on the lives of both players, highlighting the contrast between Tony’s large family, who travels with him to most tournaments, and Collin, who travels with only his wife and dog.

The episode provides a detailed account of Tony’s struggles growing up as an African American in the golfing world and how his determination helped him break through and win back-to-back tournaments. Tony is portrayed as a family-oriented and amiable person, which I can confirm to be true as I have been lucky enough to have my own personal interactions with him at a couple of Canadian Opens. I am a big fan of Tony and I believe he will win a Major tournament someday.

Collin Morikawa, one of the top 10 players in the world, is also featured in the episode. The episode shows Collin’s early success in his career, with two Major Championships already under his belt. The episode also includes highlights of Collin recounting his memories of the Masters and his meeting with Adidas to decide what he will wear for the tournament. You get an inside look at the two players on their journey to the Masters and the Open Championship, featuring heartfelt interviews filled with real emotion.

Overall, the episode provides a genuine and raw look into the lives of both players and their struggles and triumphs on the road to what happen to be my favourite tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule. It is my favourite episode of the series.

2. Imposter Syndrome (Episode 4)

Episode 4 of the series was my second favorite, which documents Joel Dahmen’s journey to the US Open. If you’re looking for a relatable golfer, then Joel is the one to watch. The episode solely follows Joel, who is not considered a star on the PGA Tour. He is honest with himself, so much so that even his childhood best friend and caddie worry about his mental state affecting his game. Joel’s candidness shines through when he says, “It’s not like I don’t try and I don’t practice, but someone’s gotta be the 70th best golfer in the world, might as well be me.” While he could potentially win more events with more self-confidence, it was still great to see the real and honest person he is. The episode provides an inside look into his qualifying for the US Open, which almost didn’t happen due to self-doubt, only for him to qualify and lead throughout the tournament where he ultimately finished tied for 10th place. A fantastic accomplishment for someone who had doubts about even trying to make it into the event in the first place. Watching this episode will undoubtedly make you a fan of Joel and his caddie, and I wish them nothing but success in the future!

3. Everything Has Led To This (Episode 8)

In my opinion, the third-best episode of Full Swing is the finale, which features the highly debated player of the golfing world at the moment, Rory McIlroy. Surprisingly, Rory wasn’t originally included in Full Swing’s filming plans, but it would be impossible to cover the 2022 PGA Tour season without him. Rory has been one of the leaders in the battle against the LIV Golf Tour and has been the face of the PGA for several years now. During the episode, Rory admits to taking the PGA vs LIV battle too personally, but in my view, it’s a good thing he did. Rory understands the importance of legacy, and I believe that to be true as well. The LIV golf tour will never be on par with the PGA Tour, and I don’t really even view both Tours in the same world at the moment.

The episode follows Rory’s intense battle against Cam Smith at The Open Championship, which takes place at the home of golf. It’s fitting that Smith joined LIV, and the media had a field day with this tournament, using it as a PGA vs LIV narrative. The episode concludes with Rory winning the Tour Championship and earning a massive $18 million payday as the winner of the FedEx Cup. The series wraps up with Rory in the locker room, scrolling through his phone and reading a congratulatory text from none other than the greatest golfer of all time, Tiger Woods. Rory mentions that Tiger is always the first to congratulate him after a win, which is any golfer’s dream.

4. Win Or Go Home (Episode 2)

Episode 2, “Win or Go Home”, takes fourth place in my rankings. This captivating episode features two contrasting players, Brooks Koepka and Scottie Scheffler. Their careers are heading in different directions, as illustrated throughout the episode. Scottie, the number one ranked golfer at the time, is unstoppable, winning the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the Green Jacket at The Masters, putting him at the top of the golfing world in 2022. Meanwhile, Brooks, known for his nonchalant attitude and almost bad boy reputation, has lost his game and confidence. Despite winning four Major Championships early in his career, he is quoted as saying he can’t compete with the young stars, including Scottie. The producers repeatedly ask him if he is joining the LIV Golf Tour, which he eventually does. The episode shows the mental toll the game of golf can take on a player. Once on top of the golfing world, Brooks is now questioning if he can ever win again, leading him to take the guaranteed money offered by LIV. Golf is known to be 90% mental and 10% skill, and this episode brings this fact to light through Brooks’ struggles with self-doubt.

5. American Dreams (Episode 5)

Episode 5 of Full Swing earns the 5th spot in my rankings. The featured players in this episode are Dustin Johnson and Matt Fitzpatrick, two golfers with vastly different personalities and career trajectories. We see Dustin make the decision to join the LIV Golf Tour, which was a significant loss for the PGA Tour, given his numerous wins and sustained top form. Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick, a loyal member of the PGA Tour, was still seeking his first win. However, he achieved that goal in spectacular fashion by winning the US Open on the same course in Boston where he had won the US Amateur Championship a decade earlier. The episode provides an intimate look into Fitzpatrick’s simple and understated life, making it easy to become a fan of his.

6. Frenemies (Episode 1)

My expectations were high for the first episode, but it left me a bit disappointed. The episode features two golfing greats, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, who have been friends and rivals since their junior golf days. We get to see them travel together to a couple of tournaments and engage in friendly trash talk on the private jet and during practice rounds. Both have achieved great success in their careers, winning majors and various other tournaments. In this episode, we witness Justin’s triumph in the PGA Championship in a thrilling playoff. I found it amusing that on the final day of the event, Justin was battling a cold and the cameras followed him to a CVS store to get medication. However, when he tried to pay for it, his card was declined, which made him seem relatable despite his immense wealth and status. While I was hoping for more excitement, I still enjoyed this episode and hope to see Jordan and Justin featured again in the series as I believe Netflix missed an opportunity to fully showcase their dynamic rivalry.

7. Golf Is Hard (Episode 7)

Episode 7, “Golf Is Hard”, takes the 7th spot on the list. This episode highlights the PGA Tour rookies of the 2022 season, including Sahith Theegala and Mito Pereria, as they compete for their first PGA Tour win, a challenging feat for rookies. Theegala comes close to victory at the Waste Management Phoenix Open but falls short, resulting in an emotional moment as he breaks down in tears in his parents’ arms. Despite not winning, Theegala’s rookie season was impressive, and he has the potential to become a great tour player. On the other hand, Pereria shocks everyone by leading the PGA Championship until the 18th Tee in the final round. However, he hits his tee shot in the water and finishes with a double bogey, knocking him out of the playoff where Justin Thomas eventually wins. Similar to Theegala, Pereria is shown being comforted by his family after the heartbreaking loss. This episode offers a good insight into the background of two young players who lack the star power and storylines of other episodes.

8. Money Or Legacy (Episode 3)

The third episode comes in last place, feeling somewhat irrelevant. It follows Ian Poulter as he considers leaving the PGA Tour to join LIV, but the problem is that he had already made that decision prior to the show’s release. The episode provides insights into his thought process, with Poulter citing his family as a key factor in his decision. Despite his success in the Ryder Cup, Poulter hasn’t had many significant wins on the PGA Tour. While his departure may not be deeply felt, the episode doesn’t quite hit the mark either. In hindsight, it would have been better to feature another golfer instead.

With the first season of Full Swing now ranked, I bring you great news for golf enthusiasts: season 2 is set to be released in 2024! I am excited to assess and compare the new episodes to those of the first season.

Tips For Lowering Your Scores

In golf, the ultimate aim is to improve one’s scores, and every player strives to achieve their personal best with each game. However, most golfers often fall short of their potential. But worry not, as I have been the “on the course crash dummy” for a significant portion of my life, and I have acquired various tips and tricks that you can incorporate into your gameplay today to help you unlock your full potential!

1. Know Your Game

One of the remarkable aspects of golf is that there is no single right or wrong way to play the game. This unique quality allows players to utilize various methods to achieve their desired outcomes. It is crucial to play to your strengths and not fall into the trap of playing to your opponent’s level, which can result in poor performance. Ultimately, no one is concerned about your golf game, as everyone is focused on their own game. Trying to execute shots that are not part of your skill set will not result in lower scores. Instead, it’s crucial to know your strengths and utilize them to your advantage, disregarding everyone else’s abilities. Impress others with your final score, not the individual shots you hit. It’s essential to remember that the scorecard contains no pictures, and nobody cares about how you got the ball in the hole; the only thing that matters is the number of strokes taken.

2. Have A Stock/ Go To Shot In Your Bag

Golf is an incredibly challenging game, with multiple obstacles to overcome on the course. Therefore, it’s essential not to make it harder for yourself. Developing a go-to shot that you can rely on is crucial to improving your scores. For instance, having a reliable 4 iron or a trustworthy hybrid in your arsenal can come in handy when struggling to hit a fairway with your driver or when facing a tricky tee shot with hazards on both sides. Knowing that you have a club that will deliver the results you desire is music to any golfer’s ears. Therefore, it’s recommended to visit the range and identify your go-to shot, so you can confidently use it when it matters the most.

3. Know Your Yardages

Golf is a game that heavily relies on distance, and it’s crucial to understand how far you can hit each club. However, what matters most is your carry distance, as it’s the only number you can genuinely rely on. Once the ball leaves the clubface, you are no longer in control, which makes knowing your carry distance all the more crucial. To get this number dialed in, it’s advisable to visit a trackman or simulator room to accurately measure your yardages. Understanding your yardages will boost your confidence when dealing with hazards and ultimately help you get closer to the pin.

4. Practice Your Short Game

When was the last time you devoted some time to practicing your putting and chipping before a round? It’s common for golfers to rush to the first tee after hitting a few drives at the range, only to wonder why their scores didn’t match their expectations at the end of the round. However, more than half of your shots are taken from 150 yards and in, with most of them being on or around the green. Therefore, practicing your putting and chipping skills will allow you to get a feel for the green speeds and conditions of the day. This will help you understand how your chips will run out and the speed of your putts. Additionally, it will help you get into a rhythm, which is crucial for consistent putting. Once you have your tempo in check, you can expect to land those chips closer and watch your putts drop, ultimately resulting in lower scores.

5. Don’t Try And Fix Your Swing On The Course

When you ask skilled golfers about their thoughts on the course, they will often tell you that they don’t think about anything in particular. While they may have a single swing thought in mind when hitting a shot, that’s typically all they focus on. The golf course isn’t the time to fix your swing; that’s what the driving range is for. Instead, during your round, simply focus on getting the ball in the hole in the fewest number of strokes possible. Leave swing mechanics for the range, where they are better addressed.

6. Commit To Each Shot

Doubting yourself on the golf course is a surefire way to run into trouble. Instead, decide on the shot you want to hit before you approach the ball, and then commit to it. Whether you’re aiming for a layup, a shot to the middle of the green, or an aggressive attempt at the pin, choose your strategy and stick with it. Hesitating or second-guessing yourself while standing over the ball will only lead to mishits, lost balls, and frustration. Focus on making smart club selections and then confidently execute the shots you have planned.

7. Take Your Medicine

To avoid compounding your troubles on the golf course, it’s crucial to prioritize quick escapes when you find yourself in a tight spot. Resist the temptation to play hero shots that have a low success rate and can often lead to more trouble. Whether you’re in the trees, fescue, or a bunker, your best bet is to punch out or get out of the hazard and back in play, giving yourself a realistic chance at saving par. While bogeys are manageable, big numbers can be devastating to your scorecard. So, take your medicine and eliminate those high numbers by making smart decisions when you’re in trouble.

8. Have Fun!

Remember to have fun when you’re out on the course. It may sound like a cliche, but it’s true. Getting frustrated or angry won’t help you play better, and you need to be focused and clear-headed to do your best. Don’t worry too much about your score, just swing freely and enjoy the experience of playing golf. After all, that’s what it’s all about.
